What is actually under the maintop
What comes off a cooktop is the maintop, and what is underneath it depends entirely on how it makes heat. On a gas top there are sealed burners, the valves behind the knobs, the electrodes beside each burner head and the one module that fires all of them. On an induction top there is a coil under every zone, a power board driving the coils, and a touch panel bonded to the underside of the glass telling the board what to do. The two share a shape and almost nothing else, and the diagnosis routes differently from the first minute.
Rangetops are the same visit. A sealed-burner rangetop is the surface without the oven, usually thirty-six inches or wider, and the modules that go into it — a griddle plate across part of the deck, a charbroiler grate, a wok ring — are the parts that generate most of the calls. Heat that arrives unevenly across a griddle is a different fault from a burner that will not light, and both of them get metered rather than guessed at.
